Cherish Parent Support Group
Our Aim
Cherish is a Registered Charity which was formed in 1987. The members are parents and Unit Staff, who work together to give a better start in life to the tiny or sick babies and their families who have been treated and cared for on the unit.
Our aim is to provide help to parents - either when their babies are on SCBU or afterwards.
This help can be in the form of financial support to enable parents to visit their babies more easily. This is often particularly difficult for parents who have to travel a considerable distance or whose baby may have to be moved to a hospital outside the area for specialist treatment.
Equally important, we offer the opportunity for parents to talk to a fellow parent who understands what it is like to have a child needing special care and we operate a rota system with members available to visit parents and help them through difficult times.
Many of the things we do go unnoticed, except by the recipients of that help. However, we are very proud of the three rooms of parents accommodation, which have been used by many parents. This accommodation was only possible through the efforts of the SCBU’s staff and supporters, generous donations from local businesses, a grant from the BBC Children in Need, and the assistance of the Health Authority.
We have also bought extra equipment for the SCBU, mainly in the form of cots and scanners, and although we are primarily a parents support group, we will continue to do so as an indirect form of support. We have also provided a variety of cameras, videos and printers to enable parents to obtain a record of their babies stay and progress on SCBU.
